Galactic Archaeology ~Probing galactic past from ancient stars~(東北大学提供)

課程の目的・概要
Course Outline
In this lecture, we will learn the basic concepts of Galactic Archaeology for understanding galaxy formation and dark matter.

Course Content
"Galactic archaeology" is a research field of astronomy that traces the formation and evolution of galaxies based on the properties of their resolved stars. In particular, the ancient stellar components of galaxies hold important fossil records for understanding their past histories. One of these is the spatial distribution and spatial motion of stellar systems, which are a certain amount of preserved information that reflects how galaxies were formed through contraction and merging processes. The other is the number of metals and detailed chemical composition of stellar atmospheres, which are also preserved information that reflects how stars were formed and their chemical evolution progressed. In this course, we will learn how galaxies, as collections of stars, have formed and evolved based on information from fossil stars.
